Bank of America Announces 2022 Detroit Student Leaders

Paid Summer Internships Connect Detroit Youth to Career Building Opportunities

DETROIT - Bank of America has announced that five Detroit-area high school students
were selected as Student Leaders® (#BofAStudentLeaders), an eight-week summer internship providing students with first-hand experience in serving their communities.

The students have started their paid internship experience of workforce skills, leadership, and civic engagement with Detroit nonprofit Focus: Hope, an organization that provides community betterment programs. As part of the program, Student Leaders will be paid $17 per hour for 35 hours per week and receive a Chromebook. This year, students will participate in in-person activities as part of the internship.

Without access to career skills-building opportunities like the Student Leaders program, many young people may be left behind from a fast-changing job market, leading to higher rates of youth unemployment.

“Developing 21st century job skills are essential for setting up young adults for long-term success,” said Matt Elliott, President, Bank of America Michigan. “Bank of America remains committed to programs like Student Leaders because we know youth access to training, job experience and leadership development are critical investments needed to strengthen our Detroit community.”

The Class of 2022 Detroit area-based Bank of America Student Leaders are:

• Yaritza Campos, a Detroit resident and graduate of Hope of Detroit Academy High School
• Yashwant Reddy Dubbaka, a Troy resident and senior at the International Academy East
• Shamere Duncan, a Detroit resident and graduate of Renaissance High School
• Mercedes (Ruben) Jimenez, a Detroit resident and graduate of Western International High School
• Brooklynn Vesey, a Detroit resident and senior at Cass Technical High School

These students will participate in a collaborative, mentor-focused program working closely with Focus: HOPE to experience first-hand the vital role nonprofits play in advancing community health, the importance of public-private partnerships to advance social change, and the work of building a more diverse and inclusive society.

“Focus: HOPE is honored to once again welcome Bank of America’s Student Leaders, exceptional young people and tomorrow’s leaders who want to make a difference in their community,” said Portia Roberson, CEO, Focus: HOPE. “We are grateful for the opportunity to educate these Student Leaders on the intricacies of nonprofit management, building upon their leadership skills, and promoting community engagement.”

Started in 2004, the Student Leaders program recognizes 300 community-focused juniors and seniors from across the U.S. annually. Bank of America Student Leaders will also participate in a virtual Leadership Summit, delivered in partnership with the Close Up Foundation. The Summit will include opportunities to engage with congressional leaders, hear from leaders in civil and human rights and the Stanford University Young Democracy at Home program which encourages conversation about current issues facing young people today.
