Opportunities
DETROIT
- Bank
of
America
has
announced
that
five
Detroit-area
high
school
students
were
selected
as
Student
Leaders®
(#BofAStudentLeaders),
an
eight-week
summer
internship
providing
students
with
first-hand
experience
in
serving
their
communities.
The
students
have
started
their
paid
internship
experience
of
workforce
skills,
leadership,
and
civic
engagement
with
Detroit
nonprofit
Focus:
Hope, an
organization
that
provides
community
betterment
programs.
As part
of the
program,
Student
Leaders
will be
paid $17
per hour
for 35
hours
per week
and
receive
a
Chromebook.
This
year,
students
will
participate
in
in-person
activities
as part
of the
internship.
Without
access
to
career
skills-building
opportunities
like the
Student
Leaders
program,
many
young
people
may be
left
behind
from a
fast-changing
job
market,
leading
to
higher
rates of
youth
unemployment.

job
skills
are

setting
up young
adults
for
long-term
success,”

Leaders

resident
and
graduate
of Hope
of
Detroit
Academy
High
School

Reddy
Dubbaka,
a Troy
resident
and
senior
at the
International
Academy
East

Shamere
Duncan,
a
Detroit
resident
and
graduate
of
Renaissance
High
School
•
Mercedes
(Ruben)
Jimenez,
a
Detroit
resident
and
graduate
of
Western
International
High
School
•
Brooklynn
Vesey, a
Detroit
resident
and
senior
at Cass
Technical
High
School
These
students
will
participate
in a
collaborative,
mentor-focused
program
working
closely
with
Focus:
HOPE to
experience
first-hand
the
vital
role
nonprofits
play in
advancing
community
health,
the
importance
of
public-private
partnerships
to
advance
social
change,
and the
work of
building
a more
diverse
and
inclusive
society.

Started
in 2004,
the
Student
Leaders
program
recognizes
300
community-focused
juniors
and
seniors
from
across
the U.S.
annually.
Bank of
America
Student
Leaders
will
also
participate
in a
virtual
Leadership
Summit,
delivered
in
partnership
with the
Close Up
Foundation.
The
Summit
will
include
opportunities
to
engage
with
congressional
leaders,
hear
from
leaders
in civil
and
human
rights
and the
Stanford
University
Young
Democracy
at Home
program
which
encourages
conversation
about
current
issues
facing
young
people
today.
